11/23/2009 Ken Griffey Jr., RF (Sea) Griffey stands to earn nearly $4 million from the Seattle Mariners next season. According to contract figures obtained by The Associated Press on Monday, Griffey's deal signed this month to return to his original team for one more season as a 40-year-old calls for a $2.35 million base salary for 2010.

Analysis: Baseball's active home run leader would earn $3.9 million if he again has at least 400 plate appearances, Seattle has an increased home attendance of 2.5 million fans and Griffey again does not go on the disabled list while remaining on the roster for the entire season. Griffey earned $3.15 million in 2009. That included $2 million in base pay plus $1.15 million of a potential $3 million in bonuses.
11/23/2009 Miguel Cabrera, 1B (Det) Cabrera finished fourth in the AL MVP voting with 171 points.

Analysis: Cabrera's first-place vote came from Keizo Konishi of Kyodo News, a member of the Seattle chapter.
11/23/2009 Omar Vizquel, SS (CWS) Vizquel has agreed to $1,375,000, one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox.

Analysis: The 42-year-old Vizquel is an 11-time Gold Glove winner and has played mostly shortstop during 21 major league seasons. He figures to add depth to Chicago's young infield.
11/23/2009 Joe Mauer, C (Min) Mauer has become only the second catcher in 33 years to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award. The Minnesota Twins star was a near-unanimous winner in voting announced Monday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, receiving 27 of 28 first-place votes and 387 points. Yankees teammates Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter were second and third.

Analysis: Mauer topped the AL in batting with a .365 average. He also led in on-base percentage and slugging percentage - two categories that have gained importance in recent years in judging production.
11/21/2009 Stephen Strasburg, SP (Was) Strasburg has a dislocation in his left knee joint and should be fine for spring training.

Analysis: The No. 1 draft pick was examined Friday by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. The Nationals say Strasburg will not require surgery, and that treatment will include rest and physical therapy. The San Diego State right-hander twisted his knee during a workout Thursday and has been scratched from his start in the Arizona Fall League championship game.

Analysis: Strasburg was hurt during a workout Thursday, and an MRI exam showed inflammation. He is scheduled to travel to Los Angeles on Friday to be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum. The Nationals issued a news release saying Strasburg's injury "is not considered serious."
11/20/2009 Omar Vizquel, SS (CWS) The Chicago White Sox are closing in on a contract agreement with Vizquel.

Analysis: The deal could be announced as soon as Monday, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not commented. Vizquel, who will be 43 in April, has played 21 major league seasons. Last year he was in a utility role with the Texas Rangers, playing shortstop, third base and second base while appearing in 62 games. He batted .266.
11/20/2009 Omar Vizquel, SS (CWS) White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has confirmed to the Chicago Sun-Times that the club has talked to Vizquel.

Analysis: Vizquel has indicated he wants to come back for a 22nd season in the majors.
11/20/2009 John Grabow, RP (ChC) The Chicago Cubs and Grabow have agreed to a two-year contract.

Analysis: The 31-year-old Grabow combined to go 3-0 with a 3.36 ERA last season in a career-high 75 relief appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cubs. He pitched 30 games for the Cubs after he was traded from the Pirates along with lefty Tom Gorzellany for pitchers Jose Ascanio and Kevin Hart, and minor league infielder Josh Harrison on July 30.
11/19/2009 Carlos Pena, 1B (TB) The Rays reinstated Pena from the 60-day disabled list on Thursday.

Analysis: He was sidelined most of the final month of the season with two broken fingers on his left hand.
11/19/2009 Aaron Heilman, RP (Ari) Heilman has been acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Chicago Cubs for two minor league prospects.

Analysis: The 31-year-old right-hander was 4-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 70 appearances last season, striking out 65 and walking 34. He spent six seasons with the New York Mets before he was traded to Seattle last December, then dealt to the Cubs a month later.
11/19/2009 Tim Lincecum, SP (SF) Lincecum has won the NL Cy Young Award, becoming the first repeat winner in the major leagues since Randy Johnson was voted the prize four straight times from 1999-2002.

Analysis: Lincecum led the NL with 261 strikeouts and tied for the league lead with four complete games and two shutouts. Only 10 points separated Lincecum and St. Louis pitchers Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright in one of the closest ballots in the award's history.
11/17/2009 Sergio Mitre, SP (NYY) The New York Yankees have declined a $1.25 million option on Mitre. The right-hander was not on the Yankees' postseason roster. Mitre now becomes eligible for salary arbitration.

Analysis: The 28-year-old Mitre had elbow ligament replacement surgery in July 2008 and agreed to a minor league contract with the Yankees last offseason. He sat out the first 50 games while serving a suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.
11/17/2009 Zack Greinke, SP (KC) Greinke has won the American League Cy Young Award, beating out Felix Hernandez after a spectacular season short on wins but long on domination.

Analysis: Greinke had a 16-8 record with a 2.16 ERA for the Kansas City Royals. He tossed six complete games and struck out 242.
11/16/2009 Eric Bruntlett, 2B (Phi) Bruntlett, who scored the winning run in the final game of the 2008 World Series, became a free agent after refusing a minor league assignment from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Analysis: Bruntlett batted just .171 (18-for-105) in this season after hitting .217 in 212 at-bats in '08. Bruntlett got more playing time last year because of an ankle injury to shortstop Jimmy Rollins in April and because he was a late-inning defensive replacement for former left fielder Pat Burrell.
11/16/2009 Ramon Hernandez, C (Cin) Hernandez agreed Monday to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Reds after Cincinnati declined his $8 million option. The deal includes a $3.25 million option for 2011 that would become guaranteed if Hernandez plays in 120 games next season. If he plays in fewer, the Reds do not have the ability to exercise the option.

Analysis: Hernandez played in only 81 games last season because of a knee injury that required surgery in July. He hit .258 with 13 doubles, five homers and 37 RBIs. He also started at first base 18 times when Joey Votto was sidelined.
11/16/2009 Andrew Bailey, RP (Oak) Bailey is the American League Rookie of the Year. He was selected first on 13 of 28 ballots and finished with 88 points.

Analysis: An All-Star in his first major league season, Bailey proved that general manager Billy Beane can spot talent for the low-budget A's. Bailey, a Staten Island native, went 6-3 with a team-best 1.84 ERA and converted 26 of 30 saves.
11/16/2009 Chris Coghlan, LF (Fla) Coghlan is the National League Rookie of the Year.

Analysis: Coghlan edged Philadelphia Phillies pitcher J.A. Happ in a close race, receiving 17 first-place votes and 105 points Monday in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He hit .321 and scored 84 runs in 128 games for Florida.
11/13/2009 Jack Wilson, SS (Sea) Wilson and the Seattle Mariners agreed Friday to a $10 million, two-year contract. The 30-year-old was acquired from Pittsburgh on July 29 along with pitcher Ian Snell for infielder Ronny Cedeno, catcher Jeff Clement and three minor league pitchers.

Analysis: Wilson hit .224 with one home run in 31 games. He missed extended time due to a sore hamstring and bruised right heel. Wilson gets $5 million in each of the next two seasons and can earn $250,000 a year in performance bonuses: $50,000 for 450 plate appearances, and $100,000 each for 500 and 550 plate appearances.
11/13/2009 Vernon Wells, CF (Tor) Wells has had surgery on his left wrist and is expected to be ready for spring training.

Analysis: The team said Friday that doctors repaired cartilage in his wrist, which he broke diving to make a catch against the Indians in 2008. Wells struggled through one of his worst seasons as a pro in 2009, batting just .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs.
