8/21/2008 Steven Jackson, RB (StL) Jackson signed a six-year contract Thursday, a day after agreeing to end a 27-day holdout, and was on the field for practice with the St. Louis Rams after completing a physical.

Analysis: Coach Scott Linehan, who conducted a month of practices without the centerpiece of the offense, joked that he gave Jackson "a big hug" and then asked for a loan. The bruising 235-pound running back had been entering the final season of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. Linehan said he understood the business end of the game after Jackson got a deal that puts him third on the salary scale on the team.
8/21/2008 Ade Jimoh, CB (NE) The Patriots signed offensive lineman Mike Flynn Thursday and released cornerback Ade Jimoh, who was signed last week as a free agent.

Analysis: Jimoh played four seasons with the Washington Redskins after being signed in 2003 as a rookie free agent. He signed with the Chicago Bears in 2007, but was placed on the injured reserve list in November with a broken collarbone.
8/21/2008 Mike Flynn, C (NE) The New England Patriots signed 10-year veteran Mike Flynn on Thursday in a move to shore up an injury-depleted offensive line. To make room for Flynn on the roster, the Patriots released cornerback Ade Jimoh, who was signed last week as a free agent.

Analysis: The 34-year-old played his entire NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens before he was released in February. He can play both center and guard. The Patriots have been battling injuries on the line throughout the preseason. Right guard Stephen Neal has been on the physically unable to perform list since training camp opened, and left tackle Matt Light has not practiced since early in camp due to an injury.
8/21/2008 Drew Stanton, QB (Det) Stanton bruised his right thumb in practice Thursday, but the backup hopes to play in the team's third exhibition game.

Analysis: Stanton said his throwing hand hit the back of a teammate's shoulder pads, and X-rays of the thumb showed it wasn't a major injury. His right hand was packed with ice after practice. The former Michigan State star completed 7 of 8 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in the first two exhibition games and ran eight times for 46 yards and a score. Stanton is competing with Dan Orlovsky to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Jon Kitna.
8/21/2008 Steven Jackson, RB (StL) Jackson is on the field for the Rams' practice after completing a physical.

Analysis: He ended his holdout on Wednesday and St. Louis appeared on the verge of signing him to a new multiyear contract. Jackson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he had agreed "in principle" to terms of a deal. He said only a few details needed to be ironed out. The 235-pound Jackson is the centerpiece of the Rams' offense. He is entering the final season of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004.
8/21/2008 Ronnie Brown, RB (Mia) Brown will likely miss Saturday's exhibition against the Kansas City Chiefs with a strained right thumb. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Thursday that Brown is not expected to play.

Analysis: Brown, who was injured in Saturday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, has been wearing a wrap around his thumb and has not participated in contact drills this week. Last year, Brown was on pace for a career year before he tore a ligament in his right knee and had season-ending surgery. Ricky Williams has been Miami's best offensive option in the preseason, leading the team in rushing through the first two games. That should change once the season starts.
8/21/2008 James Farrior, LB (Pit) The Pittsburgh Steelers signed linebacker James Farrior to a five-year, $18.2 million contract with a $5 million signing bonus on Thursday.

Analysis: He'll make $12.6 million over the first three seasons. The last two years of the deal are meant to lessen the salary cap impact of the deal. Farrior's agent, Ralph Cindrich, said the contract is meant to keep the 12-year veteran with the team until he retires. Farrior played for the New York Jets before joining the Steelers as a free agent in 2002. He was a Steelers' defensive co-captain in 2004 when he made his first trip to the Pro Bowl.
8/21/2008 Steven Jackson, RB (StL) Jackson ended his holdout on Wednesday while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract. Jackson is scheduled for a physical Thursday morning and could make it onto the practice field that day.

Analysis: Jackson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he had agreed "in principle" to terms of a deal. He added that once a few details were ironed out, "We'll be pretty much done." Jackson, the centerpiece of the team's offense, is entering the final year of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. His prolonged stand perhaps reflected a realization of his value to an attack that averaged only 16 points last season while going 3-13.
8/20/2008 Braylon Edwards, WR (Cle) Edwards did not practice Wednesday and isn't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: Edwards, sidelined nearly two weeks with a cut on his right foot, is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 7 against Dallas.
8/20/2008 Jamal Lewis, RB (Cle) Lewis did not practice Wednesday and isn't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: Lewis was sidelined with a hamstring injury he suffered in Monday's 37-34 preseason loss to the New York Giants. He is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 7 against Dallas.
8/20/2008 Derek Anderson, QB (Cle) Anderson and five teammates did not practice on Wednesday and weren't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: Anderson was out with a concussion he suffered when Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora sacked him early in the second quarter of Monday's 37-34 loss to the New York Giants. Anderson didn't visit the Browns practice field Wednesday and hasn't talked to reporters since the game.
8/20/2008 Terence Newman, CB (Dal) Newman is expected to be back in time for the Sept. 7 season opener, and maybe even the final preseason game next week.

Analysis: Rookie Mike Jenkins has been getting extra snaps and starting preseason games, but will return to a secondary role when Newman is healthy.
8/20/2008 Mike Jenkins, CB (Dal) Jenkins has been getting extra snaps and starting preseason games while Pro Bowler Terence Newman is sidelined by a groin injury.

Analysis: Jenkins, the second of the Cowboys' two first-round picks, says Newman has helped him adjust to the professional game. "He's been a lot of help to me, ever since he went down," Jenkins said. "He's definitely on my back all the time. ... It's starting to get annoying. He's in my ear more than (secondary coach Dave) Campo, more than the coach." Newman is expected to be back in time for the Sept. 7 season opener, and maybe even the final preseason game next week.
8/20/2008 Kevin Curtis, WR (Phi) Curtis will have surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia and will likely miss the start of the regular season.

Analysis: Eagles coach Andy Reid believes Curtis, the team's top receiver last season, will be back during the regular season, but no timetable has been set for his return.
8/20/2008 Demorrio Williams, LB (KC) Williams will likely miss the final two Kansas City Chiefs preseason games with a broken bone in his right hand, but expects to be ready for the Sept. 7 opener at New England.

Analysis: Williams, a free agent who signed a five-year contract in March, suffered the injury in practice Tuesday, but did not learn of the severity until a cast was placed on the hand later. From what doctors told him, Williams said, he'll miss Saturday's game at Miami and probably the Aug. 28 preseason game with St. Louis.
8/20/2008 Tom Nalen, C (Den) Nalen is headed back to the operating table. The only player left from the Denver Broncos' Super Bowl teams of the late 1990s, Nalen needs another operation on his left knee after surgery in June failed to put him back on the field without pain.

Analysis: The 37-year-old Nalen will undergo another arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday, said coach Mike Shanahan, who is holding out hope that his center will be ready for the season opener at Oakland on Sept. 8. The 15-year veteran whose 2007 season was cut short by a torn right biceps after five games missed most of training camp before returning to practice on a limited basis last week.
8/20/2008 Matt Hasselbeck, QB (Sea) Hasselbeck missed another day of practice because of a stiff back on Wednesday, and may also not play his second consecutive preseason game against San Diego.

Analysis: Coach Mike Holmgren said after Wednesday morning's drills that No. 3 quarterback Charlie Frye will likely get the bulk of playing time on Monday against the Chargers because Hasselbeck's back remains tight and sore. Hasselbeck first felt his back tighten while looking sharp in the first two series of the preseason opener Aug. 8 at Minnesota.
8/20/2008 Trent Edwards, QB (Buf) Edwards has a swollen bruise above his right kneecap, which forced him to miss practice Wednesday, a day after the Buffalo Bills starter knocked knees in a collision with running back Marshawn Lynch.

Analysis: Walking with a noticeable limp, Edwards was relieved the injury to his lower right quadriceps wasn't as severe as he initially feared, but added he's not sure whether he'll play in Buffalo's third preseason game at Indianapolis on Sunday. Except for the swelling, Edwards said he's been informed that there is nothing structurally wrong with his leg or knee. It's a relief for Edwards after he went down early in practice Tuesday.
8/20/2008 Ian Scott, DT (Car) The Carolina Panthers released injured defensive tackle Ian Scott on Wednesday.

Analysis: Scott, who signed in the offseason to provide depth after Carolina traded three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins to the New York Jets, sprained his left knee on the fifth day of training camp. Scott missed all of last season in Philadelphia with a knee injury.
8/20/2008 Travis Daniels, CB (Cle) The Miami Dolphins traded cornerback Travis Daniels to the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday for an undisclosed draft pick.

Analysis: Daniels played in all 16 games last season for Miami, including five starts. He had 27 tackles and an interception. The Dolphins took Daniels with a fourth-round draft pick in 2005. Then-coach Nick Saban made the pick after coaching Daniels at LSU. Daniels has played cornerback and safety. He started 14 games his rookie season and had 62 tackles and an interception. Daniels recorded 36 tackles and an interception in 2006.
