Aston Villa v Bolton Wanderers
Time Commentary
93' FIVE-GOAL VILLA
Aston Villa supplied five finishes through five different scorers to bury Bolton 5-1 at Villa Park. The Villains took an early lead after Ashley Young buried a rebound from John Carew's header, and dominated the remainder of the half before doubling their lead with a smartly-taken Gabby Agbonlahor goal just before half time, although Johan Elmander immediately pulled one back for Bolton. There was no contest in the second half; Carew stormed through the defence to score a superb third after 53 minutes, and James Milner increased the pain, finishing with aplomb after a penalty had come back off the goalkeeper and then the post. Carlos Cuellar finished the rout minutes later, providing a deft touch to deflect Milner's cross into the net. Villa were simply rampant in the second half, and Bolton had absolutely no answer. Back to the drawing board for them.
93' FULL TIME ASTON VILLA 5 BOLTON 1
The curtain comes down on a very good day for Aston Villa, and a very bad one indeed for Bolton Wanderers.
93' ALMOST SIX
Ashley Young nearly rounds off the afternoon with a swerving 30-yard free kick, but Jaaskelainen second-guesses the winger to make a calm and collected save.
91' HEADING HOME
The fans are heading home in their droves, but strangely it's Villa supporters who are departing. There's certainly no way their team can relinquish the points now.
88' YELLOW CARD
Gardner immediately makes his mark by barging over Elmander in a fit of over-enthusiasm, and is booked for his troubles.
86' SUBSTITUTIONS
Martin O'Neill takes the opportunity to give some fringe players a bit of game time, sending on Fabian Delph and Craig Gardner for Sidwell and Reo-Coker, who hands the captain's armband to Richard Dunne.
83' NO CHANCE
The busy Lee attempts to restore some Bolton pride with a shot from distance, but it smacks of desperation and sails harmlessly over.
82' SUBSTITUTION
Nathan Delfouneso celebrates his new contract with a late appearance in place of the ever-impressive Milner.
81' EASY ACCESS
Warnock advances upfield and meets little in the way of a challenge before passing the ball forward for Carew to spin his marker and send a drive over the bar.
78' HOME AND DRY
It may just be safe to say that Aston Villa have this game in the bag now, and they most certainly deserve it. Bolton's best option is to batten down the hatches and make sure their beleaguered players don't sustain too much damage to morale.
75' GOAL!!! ASTON VILLA
As predicted, this match is turning into a rout. Milner bends in a cross from the left and it takes the merest of touches from Carlos Cuellar to steer the ball home for his first Aston Villa goal.
73' BAD MISS
Lee goes agonisingly close to pulling one back for Bolton as a clearance drops kindly to the South Korean inside the penalty area, but he snatches at the shot and drags it wide of the post.
72' GOAL!!! ASTON VILLA
Davies draws on great reserves of strength to shove the wardrobe-sized Carew to the turf and concede a clear penalty. Milner takes the spot-kick but Jaaskelainen pulls off a great save. The ball falls to the feet of Sidwell, whose shot thumps against the post, and Milner is there to atone for his miss by spanking the loose ball home.
70' SUBSTITUTION
'Ginger Mourinho' Gary Megson goes for another managerial masterstroke as he withdraws Taylor in favour of Gretar Steinsson. Well, you never know!
67' SLICK PASSING
Villa fashion an opening with an impressive passing move, Ashley Young speeding up the left and cutting the ball back for Warnock, who switches it out right to Luke Young. The right-back steps forward and crosses into the box where Sidwell and Agbonlahor just fail to get on the end of it.
64' WILLING RUNNER
Luke Young spots Sidwell making a surging run into the box and floats a ball in for the midfielder to head over from near the penalty spot.
62' QUICK THINKING
The fourth looks on for Villa as Ashley Young prepares to slide a through ball in for James Milner, but Knight reads this one in time and steps smartly sideways to make the interception.
59' HOME ADVANTAGE
Villa are unquestionably the dominant side in this match now, and the gap in class between these two teams is really beginning to show. This could well end in a rout.
56' HEADS DOWN
As you might expect, Bolton's shell-shocked players are starting to look dispirited. Gary Megson screams from the bench as his players start to drift out of their shape, but it would take merely a single goal to get the visitors back in with a chance here.
53' GOAL!!! ASTON VILLA
John Carew tops his sterling performance with a stupendous goal. Milner lays the ball inside to the big man, and he simply powers past both Knight and Cahill before slamming the ball into the roof of the net. That was an almost scary sight, so powerful did Carew look in action.
52' CURLED WIDE
Young comes up with one of his trademark cuts inside and curls the ball around the keeper but not quite inside the far post.
51' DEFENDER'S EFFORT
Luke Young is tackled by Ricketts near the corner flag, but springs up quickly to nick the ball back off his opponent and charge in on goal. The shot he gets away is befitting of a full back, swerving comfortably over the top of Jaaskelainen's goal.
48' TOP TECHNIQUE
A Bolton corner is headed clear by Dunne, and it falls to Fabrice Muamba lurking on the 18-yard line. The England under-21 international hits a cultured volley back the same way but it flies narrowly over the crossbar.
46' SECOND HALF
Bolton kick off to get the action underway once again, with neither manager having made any half time changes.
45' LAST-MINUTE FLURRY
The game has really set alight in the last few minutes of the first half here at Villa Park, with two goals in as many minutes ensuring that the second period of play should be a tense and exciting affair. Villa looked the better side in the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead through Ashley Young's close-range strike in the fifth minute, retaining that superiority for most of the half while suffering only sporadic Bolton incursions into their penalty area. The home side went two-up on 43 minutes when Agbonlahor finished from Carew's pass, but were pegged back inside a minute by when Gary Cahill's header hit the postand Johan Elmander tucjed home the rebound. With just the one goal separating the teams, the second half is anybody's for the taking.
45' HALF TIME ASTON VILLA 2 BOLTON 1
The whistle sounds to bring the first-half and its goals to a close.
45' YELLOW CARD
Cahill shows his determination not to let his side fall further behind as he practically rugby-tackles Carew on the halfway line. Chris Foy is quick to produce a yellow card.
44' GOAL!!! BOLTON
All credit to Bolton for getting straight back into it, but Villa have lapsed here. Lazy defending allows Elmander to gallop through the midfield, supplying a high ball for the sprinting Cahill to power a header off the hand of Friedel and then the back off the post before Elmander pokes the ball into the back of the net. What a time to score!
43' GOAL!!! ASTON VILLA
Villa's strike partnership make good on their first-half promise as Carew supplies Agbonlahor with a simple pass, his young colleague taking one touch to control before sliding a low shot through the legs of Jaaskelainen. Villa look in control now.
40' GREAT TACKLE
Villa's stand-in skipper Nigel Reo-Coker saves the day with a superb last-ditch sliding challenge as Gardner jinks his way through the defence on his way to goal. The approach play from Taylor was good enough to blow a huge hole in the defence for Gardner to exploit.
37' OFFSIDE
Carew rises to nod Milner's latest raking cross past the helpless goalkeeper and into the back of the net, but he looks up to see the linesman's raised flag before even having the chance to celebrate.
34' TEMPO DOWN
After that fast and furious opening period, the game has slowed to something of a crawl. Bolton need to show a bit more haste, or at least some kind of desire to get back into this match.
31' OFF TARGET
Agbonlahor picks the ball up on the right-hand side of the box and immediately goes for goal, the drive ending up well wide as with all of his other efforts so far today.
30' SUBSTITUTION
Gary Megson makes a surprisingly early change, and it appears to be tactical, withdrawing Cohen and sending on Johan Elmander to provide some extra support for the previously isolated Davies.
28' CLASH OF HEADS
Knight and Robinson are both poleaxed as the pair collide in the effort to head away a loose ball. Robinson gets up quickly, but Knight is on the ground for a minute or so before gingerly rising to his feet and continuing manfully on.
25' LUCKY ESCAPE
Matt Taylor looks sheepish after Cahill hacks away the midfielder's terrible clearance, with Agbonlahor millimetres away from getting a shot in on goal.
24' YELLOW CARD
Tamir Cohen is the first player to see yellow, and didn't he deserve it for a crunching late tackle on Milner.
23' WING WIZARD
Another telling Milner cross causes chaos in the penalty area, with Muamba seemingly poised to head the ball into his own net before Jaaskelainen plucks it out of the air.
20' TOP PAIR
Carew and Agbonlahor demonstrate their growing chemistry as the former directs a header towards the latter, who holds off Knight before spinning to spank a shot over the crossbar.
18' SAFE HANDS
Milner charges down the right wing and whips in a devilish cross that scares the living daylights out of the Trotters' back line but doesn't evade the experienced clutches of Jussi Jaaskelainen.
15' MARGINAL DECISION
Agbonlahor is only just pulled up for offside as he sprints clear of a static Bolton defence, and it's already the third time he's been caught off in this game. Could it be that the youngster's speed is making the linesman's job rather a difficult one?
12' YOUNG ON SONG
Ashley Young is flying at the moment; the youngster has no difficulty bamboozling Robinson down the left, before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful drive that soars a few inches over the bar.
9' OFF THE LINE
Matt Taylor floats a hopeful free kick into the box, and it takes a goal-line clearance from Cuellar to deny the header of Cahill after it evades the despairing dive of Brad Friedel.
6' GOAL!!! ASTON VILLA
The Villains make good on their swift start. Jussi Jaaskelainen gets down well to push away a header from Carew, but Ashley Young reacts with speed to bury the rebound from inside the six-yard box. Bolton's defence look unable to cope with the mighty Norwegian Carew.
3' OUT OF THE BLOCKS
Villa have made a lively start and look like they're really up for it today. Carew comes close to setting Agbonlahor free with a headed flick-on, but Cahill manages to nip in and block the move.
0' KICK OFF
After a minute's silence in honour of fallen heroes, this afternoon's referee Chris Foy blows that all-important whistle to get today's Premier League clash at Villa Park underway.
0' BOLTON LINE-UP

0' ASTON VILLA LINE-UP
Friedel; Warnock, L.Young, Dunne, Cuellar; Sidwell, Reo-Coker, Milner, A.Young; Carew, Agbonlahor
0' BOLTON TEAM NEWS
Paul Robinson may make an appearance for the Trotters in place of the suspended Jlloyd Samuel, while Riga and Shittu will need to shake off troublesome hamstring problems in order to play any part. Sean Davis and Joey O'Brien have yet to recover from their own problems.
0' ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS
Villa have Stiliyan Petrov and Habib Beye serving one-match suspensions, the latter for his midweek sending off against West Ham. Carlos Cuellar returns from his own suspension. Injury wise, Milner and Heskey look set to miss out while Craig Gardner's groin complaint makes him another doubt. Davies and Downing remain long-term casualties.
0' ONE TO WATCH
Bolton's star player and defender-in-chief Gary Cahill, who joined the club for £5m from Aston Villa in January 2008, will be looking to put one over on his old team mates. Cahill, who is likely to be partnered in defence by fellow ex-villain Zat Knight, recently said that Martin O'Neill made a mistake in selling him, and his continued presence in the England squad certainly backs up his claim.
0' POPPIES ON PARADE
On Thursday, officials in the Bolton boardroom caved in to mounting pressure and agreed to include a poppy on each player's shirt this weekend in honour of the impending Remembrance Sunday. The Trotters were one of the last three clubs to resist public opinion on the matter, leaving only Liverpool and Manchester United to fly the poppy-less flag.
0' GIANTS KILLED
Martin O'Neill's men were taken down a peg in midweek when they went down fighting to a West Ham side that were wallowing in the relegation zone until Wednesday night's victory. This isn't a new thing for Villa; while consistently showing over the last couple of years that they can mix it with the big boys, today's hosts are prone to capitulations when meeting the Premier Leagues weaker outfits.
0' REF WATCH
This afternoon's man in the middle is Merseysider Chris Foy, whose natural loyalties mean he would likely prefer a Bolton win (the 46-year-old is an Everton supporter), the Toffee's being Villa's closest match in the league last season. As ever, though, Mr. Foy is of course expected to remain 100% neutral for the duration of the game.
0' PREVIEW
This afternoon's Premier League clash at Villa Park may not appear an equal contest at first, but in fact each of the competing sides may well fancy their chances. Neither Aston Villa nor Bolton have met expectations so far this season, though in Villa's case the ineptitude of the competition has left them in a favourable position anyway. The seventh-placed Villains are currently a mere seven points ahead of their more northerly opponents, and have looked flimsy at times this season, leaving them open to the more physical attributes of Gary Megson's robust side. The Trotters will surely take the game to the home side, hopefully making for an open and entertaining afternoon of top-flight football.
