Birmingham City v Manchester City
Time Commentary
97' FULL TIME
It's a rare goalless draw in the Premier League then as both Birmingham and Man City fire blanks at St Andrews. The visitors have Shay Given to thank for their point - he saved James McFadden's penalty as well as numerous other chances. Alex McLeish may well have taken a point before the game, but after outplaying City he'll be ruing his side's profligacy. Full time at St Andrews, Birmingham 0 Manchester City 0.
96' RED CARD
Ridiculous red card for Barry Ferguson who deliberately handles the ball in a nothing situation and picks up his second yellow of the afternoon.
95' LAST-CHANCE SALOON
Surely last-chance saloon in Tevez's search for a spectacular goal. This one's slightly closer to goal, but doesn't trouble Taylor.
93' PETROV CHANCE
Chances coming thick and fast now as both sides push for a late winner. Petrov is free on the right of the box and lines up a volley, but it's closer to the corner flag than Taylor's goal. Should have done better.
91' TWO'S KOMPANY
Heart in mouth time for City but Phillips just can't get a shot away after a cross bobbles to him six yards from goal. Kompany made a nuisance of himself to put off the striker.
90' ADDED TIME
That Johnson wind incident, plus numerous subs and a penalty, has added up to six minutes of added time.
90' BENITEZ HEADER
Larsson bends another dangerous cross into the box, Benitez gets there ahead of team mate Phillips but nods it straight into Given's arms.
88' BLUES SUB
Late change for Birmingham and it's a call to arms for Kevin Phillips. He replaces Cameron Jerome, and has around six minutes to find a winning goal.
86' WINDED
After three minutes on the floor Johnson is now back on his feet. Ridiculous as it sounds, I think Johnson was merely winded.
83' TREATMENT REQUIRED
Genuine concern all round as Roger Johnson takes a Wayne Bridge thunderbolt for the team and goes down in serious pain. Not quite sure what the problem is, but he needs some treatment from several medical staff.
83' FOOT IN
Benitez very nearly breaks free in the box but Kompany gets a foot in and concedes a corner, which is cleared.
80' SLOW DEATH
Far from staging a grandstand finish, this game is dying a slow death. Maybe both sides are happy with a point here.
78' WRIGHT-PHILLIPS CROSS
Wright-Phillips breaks free down the right but his deep cross doesn't quite find Tevez.
74' NOT CLICKING
Just 16 minutes to go then and there's nothing to separate these two sides yet. City just aren't clicking today, but can they grab a late winner? Blues still look the more likely scorers, if anyone.
71' SKIED
Larsson goes for goal himself this time, but skies a 30 yard half volley.
69' JUST SHORT
It's a mystery as to how Birmingham haven't scored in this game. Larsson is the architect again, aiming a devilish ball across the face of goal, but Jerome is just short of connecting six yards out.
67' SIGHTS SET
Tevez has his sights set on scoring a spectacular goal today, God knows he's given it a few goes so far. Another 25-yard rocket has to be smartly tipped over by Taylor, before the corner comes to nothing.
66' CITY SUB
The glove-clad but short-sleeved Martin Petrov is on for City. Really, I've never understood that. Anyway, Roque Santa Cruz is the man to be withdrawn.
63' BOOKING
Yet again Mike Dean gets his yellow card out, this time for Santa Cruz as the striker tracks back and hauls down Fahey.
62' JEROME HEADER
Larsson finds Jerome with a whipped, vicious cross but the striker, under pressure from Kompany, nods just over from eight yards. Decent attempt though.
61' BIRMINGHAM SUB
Safe to say James McFadden is not a happy chappy. First he misses a penalty, then he gets booked, and now he's been substituted. All in the space of five minutes - nice. Keith Fahey is on for Birmingham.
60' STRAIGHT AT TAYLOR
Lescott gets on the end of Barry's corner for City but nods straight at Taylor.
60' CITY SUB
De Jong's somewhat questionable contribution to the game is over. Stephen Ireland slots into City's midfield.
60' CRUCIAL INTERCEPTION
Wright-Phillips gets in behind Dann and to the byline, but Roger Johnson crucially intercepts the cross.
57' BOOKING
A clearly immensely frustrated McFadden is then booked for kicking the ball away.
56' SAVED!
Shay Given guesses left and brilliantly saves James McFadden's spot kick. Heartache for Blues, redemption for De Jong.
55' PENALTY!
Birmingham have a penalty and a huge opportunity to take the lead. De Jong leaps for a loose ball in the area and clearly touches the ball with his hand. No arguments there.
55' BOOKING
Bridge sees yellow for kicking the ball away.
52' TRACKING BACK
Superb tracking back from Shaun Wright-Phillips who, with Zabaleta forward, helps Vincent Kompany snuff out the threat of Benitez bearing down on goal.
50' UNSELFISH
Wayne Bridge gallivants through the heart of City's midfield before laying off for Tevez, who spanks one well over the bar from 25 yards. Bridge will be ruing his unselfishness.
47' BRIEF PANIC
Brief moment of panic for City as Lescott tries to shield a through ball towards Given and Benitez very nearly nips in.
46' SECOND HALF
And we're back playing again at St Andrews.
45' HALF TIME
Plenty to ponder for both managers at the break. Blues have definitely edged proceedings but don't have a goal to show for their efforts - will they stick or twist after the break? And can City get any worse in the second half? Probably not. Expect Stephen Ireland and/or Martin Petrov to be utilised before long.
45' BOOKING
Scott Dann wipes out Tevez and picks up a deserved booking.
43' PLUCKED
Another decent chance for Birmingham. Larsson pressurises Lescott into a mistake on the right of the area and the ball breaks to Bowyer, whose 15-yard thump is well plucked by Shay Given.
41' WRATH EARNED
Mike Dean earns the wrath of the Blues fans for not booking Nigel De Jong after the Dutchman is late on Larsson.
37' SCUFFED
Plenty of build up and anticipation as Craig Bellamy takes an age to line up a 35-yard free kick. Much to the joy of the home supporters, he scuffs it miserably wide.
34' INCHES AWAY
Seb Larsson finds room between City's two centre backs but Lee Bowyer just can't find the advancing Swede with a through pass. Literally inches away.
32' TEVEZ SHOT
Blues fall to sleep and let Tevez get on the end of a throw in, before arrowing a 25-yard shot over Taylor's bar.
30' SMOTHERED
Wright-Phillips gets to the byline and nearly sets up Santa Cruz for a tap in from six yards, but through a combination of Maik Taylor and two Birmingham defenders, the home side have enough men back to smother the danger.
29' LESCOTT HEADER
Bellamy aims the free kick towards Lescott, who nods over from ten yards. The former Everton centre back grew up in this part of the world, but was apparently a Villa fan.
28' BOOKING
Barry Ferguson blocks Bellamy as City try to break from that Birmingham corner, and picks up the game's first booking.
27' MCFADDEN SHOT
And there's another Birmingham livewire, James McFadden. With seemingly nothing on, he turns and whacks a beauty towards the top corner from 30 yards, and Given has to palm behind for a corner.
24' LIVEWIRE
This 'Chucho' fella is quite the livewire for Birmingham. I don't even think he knows what he's going to do with the ball next.
22' BELLAMY CHANCE
City are ominously moving through the gears here. Tevez tees up Bellamy outside the box but his goalbound curler is deflected wide.
20' BREAK
Birmingham promisingly break from a Man City corner. Benitez nearly finds Larsson with a long raked pass but Given gets there first.
19' GOOD SAVE
Wright-Phillips tests Taylor with an awkward, bouncing 25-yard shot which the keeper parries before Carr thumps the ball clear ahead of the lurking Santa Cruz.
18' PACE SUBSIDES
Finally the frantic pace subsides. Have Birmingham already missed the boat, with not scoring in that opening spell?
15' END TO END
End to end stuff here, with both sides giving it everything. A delicious Bowyer cross somehow misses both Jerome and Benitez.
14' BLOCKED
Bellamy gets on the end of a clever Kompany through pass but sees his shot on the turn from inside the box blocked by Roger Johnson.
13' SANTA CRUZ HEADER
First sniff of goal for City at the other end. Zabaleta crosses for Santa Cruz who beats his man to the ball but directs an eight-yard header comfortably over the bar.
11' ANOTHER CHANCE
They can't keep wasting these chances, Birmingham, but it's still one-way traffic at St Andrews. Jerome dispossesses Kompany and threads through for Benitez, who is one-on-one with Given but slots a weak shot straight the keeper.
9' OFF THE POST
City are all over the place here and Birmingham are inches away from taking full advantage. Benitez bears down on the City back two, twisting one way and another in front of Kompany before hitting a low deflected strike onto the post via a Given fingertip.
8' BOOED
Barry is being constantly booed by the home fans, for his Villa connections obviously. Craig Bellamy is also getting the bird, not really sure why. Villa connections? Nope. Wolves or West Brom? Nope. Must just be his general reputation of being a bit of a berk.
7' FERGUSON SHOT
Great start from Birmingham here - they're all over City. Ferguson nicks the ball off a hesitant Barry and fires a left-footed shot just wide from 18 yards.
4' LAST DITCH
Santa Cruz very nearly gets on the end of a through ball but Scott Dann slides in a last-ditch toe to deny the Paraguayan from getting a free shot on goal.
3' CARR CROSS
Stephen Carr cuts in from the left flank but can't find a team mate with a cross.
2' NOT FULL
City are playing in their black away kit this afternoon. St Andrews is by no means full incidentally. In fact has it been full yet this season? Blues fans obviously aren't too enamoured with the current side, as was the case last season despite their promotion.
1' KICK OFF
Birmingham get us underway.
0' MINUTE'S SILENCE
With Birmingham not hosting another game before next weekend's Remembrance Sunday, a respectful minute's silence is perfectly observed.
0' TEAM OUT
Members of all the Armed Forces lead out both sides onto the St Andrews turf, with the forthcoming Remembrance Sunday in mind.
0' BIRMINGHAM LINE UP
Just the one enforced change from last weekend's 2-1 win over Sunderland with Maik Taylor replacing the ineligible Joe Hart in goal, as expected. Gregory Vignal and Keith Fahey shake off injuries to take a place on the bench. Full line up: Taylor; Carr, Johnson, Ridgewell, Dann; Larsson, Ferguson, Bowyer, McFadden; Jerome, Benitez. Subs: Doyle, Parnaby, Vignal, Carsley, Fahey, McSheffrey, Phillips.
0' MAN CITY LINE UP
Roque Santa Cruz makes his first Premier League start for City as Mark Hughes makes just two changes from the side which beat Scunthorpe 5-1 in the Carling Cup in midweek. Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bridge, rested for that game, are both restored to the starting XI, with Sylvinho and Stephen Ireland making way. Kolo Toure misses out with a heel injury. Full line up: Given; Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Bridge; Wright Phillips, De Jong, Barry; Tevez, Santa Cruz, Bellamy. Subs: Taylor, Richards, Sylvinho, Johnson, Ireland, Weiss, Petrov.
0' KICK OFF 1600 BST
Kick off is at 1600 BST at St Andrews today. Join us from half an hour before kick off for all the team news followed by live text commentary on Birmingham v Manchester City.
0' THE REF
Mike Dean is a reformed man these days. The 41-year-old from the Wirral sent off 12 players last season, and ten in 2007-08, but has kept his red card in his pocket so far this campaign. He's refereed both these sides already in 2009-10 (Blackburn 0-2 Man City, Sunderland 2-0 Birmingham), both without controversy.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Birmingham have won three of the last four meetings between these two at St Andrews, including a 3-1 triumph the last time they met in March 2008. City were a different prospect back then though – only one player, Stephen Ireland, remains in Mark Hughes' first-team plans just over 18 months later. In total the teams have met 72 times on Birmingham turf, with Blues winning 46 and Man City just 16.
0' TEAM NEWS
On-loan Man City keeper Joe Hart is ineligible for Birmingham, so Maik Taylor will deputise between the sticks. Blues have a strengthened squad to choose from, boosted by the return to fitness of Giovanny Espinoza, Damien Johnson, Keith Fahey, Gregory Vignal and Martin Taylor. Robinho is still out injured for City, but Martin Petrov and Kolo Toure are expected to shake off minor knocks.
0' PREVIEW
After a scintillating day of Premier League action yesterday, Birmingham and Manchester City have a lot to live up to this afternoon. Saturday's results heightened the need for a win for both these sides – City, who've drawn three in a row, will overtake defeated Liverpool and Spurs with a win and up to fourth spot, while Birmingham could move up to the giddy heights of 12th place and five points clear of the relegation zone.
