Atlético Madrid v Chelsea
Time Commentary
94' FULL TIME
A breathtaking finish to a contest high on quality in the Vicente Calderon, which at the end of it confirms that Chelsea are through to the Champions League knockout phase, and Atletico are out, with two games to spare. A draw was probably a fair result - Atletico attacked with heart but didn't have the quality to regularly unlock Chelsea's back four, instead being reduced to long range efforts. Not that that troubled Sergio Aguero, whose two fabulous goals made for a great game for the neutral. Full time in Madrid, Atletico 2 Chelsea 2.
92' CHANCES
Drogba and Deco with chances for Chelsea but neither find the target.
90' ATLETICO 2-2 CHELSEA
A tale of two world class strikers in Madrid tonight, and the young pretender may have just had the last laugh. SERGIO AGUERO curls a magnificent 25-yard free kick past Petr Cech, who stumbles at just the wrong moment. What a finish to this game - three goals in eight minutes.
89' GROUP D UPDATE
Porto have taken the lead against Apoel, through Falcao. With just a minute to go, Group D is very nearly done and dusted with two games to spare.
88' ATLETICO 1-2 CHELSEA
Fantastic play from DIDIER DROGBA who has surely won this game for Chelsea. He nicks the ball off Atletico and races past two players and, after his shot is saved, taps home the rebound.
87' BOOKING
Ridiculous booking for 'captain fantastic' John Terry, who sees yellow for kicking the ball away. Very silly.
86' CLAIMED
Atletico on the attack but Jurado's cross is comfortably claimed by Cech.
83' ATLETICO CHANGE
Atletico make a change - Jurado replaces Simao.
83' GOING THROUGH
And as things stand, Chelsea are now qualifying for the knockout stages. Still 0-0 between Apoel and Porto.
82' ATLETICO 1-1 CHELSEA
From the corner Malouda whips a cracking delivery towards DIDIER DROGBA who beats Asenio with a bullet header.
81' HALF CHANCE
Half chance for Chelsea as Malouda tries to find a well-placed Lampard, but Atletico clear for a corner.
79' TO THE MAXI
Maxi Rodriguez tries his luck from range but it doesn't trouble Cech.
77' DECO CHANCE
Asenio makes a right hash of a Chelsea cross, punching only as far as Deco who really should do better with a first-time volley, but flashes it over the bar.
75' MISSED
Simao crosses towards Aguero but the Argentine can't quite make any contact with the ball at the far post.
74' PERMUTATIONS
As far as the Group D table is concerned, Atletico are putting themselves right back in the mix if they can hold on. Chelsea have nine points, Porto seven, Atletico four and Apoel two, as things stand. With a trip to Porto next up for the Blues, they're in danger of taking their qualification campaign right to the wire.
73' DROGBA SHOT
Lampard slips in Drogba but he can't find the target from just inside the box.
73' ATLETICO CHANGE
And a change for Atletico, with Maxi Rodriguez replacing Reyes.
70' CHANGES
Nicolas Anelka and Deco are utilised as Ancelotti shuffles his pack. Not a surprise to see the ineffective Kalou and Joe Cole withdrawn.
68' ALIVE AND KICKING
The Vicente Calderon is absolutely alive and kicking now. When these guys get going they can really make some noise, let me tell you.
67' ATLETICO 1-0 CHELSEA
Chelsea can't say they hadn't been warned - Atletico have a deserved lead and it's that man SERGIO AGUERO who gives it to them with a spanking volley from just inside the box. Wonderful strike.
64' REYES FREE KICK
Free kick in a decent position for Atletico. Reyes strikes low but Cech makes the save.
62' PANIC
Momentary panic for Chelsea as, not for the first time tonight, Cech fails to come and claim an Atletico set piece, but Simao can't divert goalwards and the danger passes.
60' WASTED
Drogba wastes a decent position for Chelsea, lashing way over the bar with team mate Kalou well placed.
59' TAKING THE MICHAEL
A swap of two Michaels for Chelsea, with Ballack on for Essien.
58' HEADING THROUGH
Which means that if the 'scores' stay the same, Chelsea will be through to the knockout stages.
57' GROUP D UPDATE
I promised myself I'd keep you up-to-date with any goal action in tonight's other Group D game, and I can assure you that is still the case. Apoel Nicosia v Porto is currently goalless.
55' SLIGHT KNOCK
Incidentally Aguero's absence from the starting XI can be explained by a slight knock, apparently.
54' AGUERO ON
The biggest roar of the night is given to Sergio Aguero's entrance, as the 20-year-old Argentine striker replaces Sinama-Pongolle. The former Liverpool player was about as effective tonight as he was back in the day for the Reds. So, not very.
50' OFF THE POST
Drogba shows huge ambition, going for goal from 35-yards out on the left of the area, but it's justified as his cracking strike has to be tipped onto the post by Sergio Asenio.
48' DANGER
Essien and Terry both miss a dangerous Simao free kick but fortunately for the Blues it drops wide of Cech's post via a slight deflection, and the corner comes to nothing.
47' NON-CONTACT
The Dutch referee is having a bit of a detrimental effect of this game, blowing up for absolutely everything. It's essentially a non-contact game.
46' SECOND HALF
And we're playing again in Madrid.
45' HALF TIME
Decent entertainment in Madrid, but it's the home side who have had the better of proceedings. Atletico have belied their recent form and league positions and if Chelsea aren't careful they could lose this in the second half.
44' LAMPARD SHOT
Lampard isn't too far wide with a piledriver from 25 yards.
41' WILD AND WIDE
Atletico definitely on top here - Chelsea will be grateful to hear the half time whistle at this rate. Cleber Santana has room outside the box but rather snatches at his shot, which is wild and wide.
37' PEREA CHANCE
Reyes cuts out two Chelsea players with a clever pass to right-back Perea who, from the right byline, angles a left-footed shot wide. Decent chance that, but he should have crosses to Forlan.
33' BOOKING
Paulo Assuncao goes through the back of Alex and that's another yellow card. Referee Kuipers has set an unfortunately low standard - he's got to book all challenges of the severity of Essien's from now on. Assuncao will miss Madrid's next game through suspension.
32' COLE-ITION
The Coles combine nicely on the left and Ashley whips a superb cross onto Kalou's noggin - the striker is a fraction away from netting with an eight-yard header.
31' HIGH AND WIDE
Atletico continue to pepper Cech's goal from long range. Forlan tries his luck this time, but it's high and wide.
29' SIMAO STRIKE
Simao, who's scored some famous goals against Liverpool and Man United in years gone by, arrows a 30-yarder just wide from near the left touchline.
27' BOOKING
Reyes needlessly trips Ashley Cole as the defender clears his lines, and picks up the evening's second yellow card.
26' LACK OF ACTION
Plenty of nice football still on display here, but not too much goalmouth action at the end of it. As ever, the first goal will be important.
22' TOP DEFENDING
Lampard chips a gorgeous pass through the Atletico defence to the onrushing Kalou, but he can't shake off the shackles of Ibanez and the defender eventually wins the day. Top defending, which it had to be.
21' REYES SHOT
He may be a big girl's blouse, but he can play a bit as well. Reyes, just outside the right of the area, cuts inside Malouda and dinks a pearler towards the top corner, which forces Cech into a fine diving save.
20' LET DOWN
The Blues are finding the Atletico final third with some comfort here, but the final ball has been a big let down.
19' DISAPPOINTING
Free kick and a corner for Chelsea, but both deliveries from Lampard are disappointing.
17' BOOKING
Essien barges Reyes off the ball with a shoulder charge and picks up a very harsh booking. I'd forgotten Reyes is a big girl's blouse.
15' OPEN
Pretty open so far in Madrid. Both sides are getting the ball down and playing, which will surely suit Chelsea. Lampard and Belletti fling in crosses from the right, but neither seriously test the home defence.
12' QUALITY BENCHES
Some of the quality on both benches tonight is pretty astounding, considering neither of these sides' qualification fates are sealed. The likes of Nicolas Anelka, Michael Ballack, Deco, Sergio Aguero, Raul Garcia and Maxi Rodriguez are waiting in the wings.
9' DROGBA SHOT
Drogba goes close for the Blues, taking Essien's pass and firing a low shot wide on the turn with his left foot. A decent attempt, from the edge of the area.
8' BIG DAY SUNDAY
While Chelsea host Man United on Sunday, Atletico welcome fierce rivals Real Madrid to the Vicente Calderon in what is a huge fixture. Maybe that's had some bearing on manager Flores' team selection tonight? His side are all-but out of the competition, barring a minor miracle.
5' SHOT APIECE
After Essien sees a regulation 30-yarder saved by keeper Asenio, Diego Forlan goes a might closer at the other end from a similar distance. Cech is worried but the ball flashes wide.
4' UNDIGNIFIED
Drogba's first impact of his Champions League season is a rather undignified header behind from three yards as he takes no chances with a free kick, despite no Atletico player deciding to attack the ball. Cech really should have claimed that.
3' ATMOSPHERE
Cracking atmosphere inside the Vicente Calderon, despite the fact it's not full. Nothing doing on the pitch yet, with both sides settling down.
1' KICK OFF
We're underway in Madrid.
0' ATLETICO LINE UP
Two familiar faces are brought into Atletico's XI as new boss Quique Flores makes four changes from the side which lost 1-0 at Athletico Bilbao at the weekend. Former Liverpool, ahem, favourite, Florent Sinamo-Pongolle and ex-Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes replace Sergio Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez, while the other two swaps see Luis Perea and Cleber Santana come in for Tomas Ujfalusi and Raul Garcia. Full line up: Sergio Asenjo; Perea, Pablo Ibanez, Juanito, Antonio Lopez; Simao, Paulo Assuncao; Cleber Santana, Reyes; Forlan, Sinama Pongolle. Subs: De Gea, Ujfalusi, Raul Garcia, Maxi Rodriguez, Jurado, Alvaro Dominguez, Aguero.
0' CHELSEA LINE UP
Carlo Ancelotti makes six changes from the side which beat Bolton 4-0 at the Reebok on Saturday. Didier Drogba makes his first European appearance of the season in what is expected to be a 4-3-2-1 formation. Juliano Belletti, Alex, Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda, Deco and Joe Cole are also brought into the starting XI. Full line up: Cech; Belletti, Alex, Terry, Ashley Cole; Lampard, Essien, Malouda; Kalou, Joe Cole; Drogba. Subs: Hilario, Ivanovic, Carvalho, Ballack, Deco, Sturridge, Anelka.
0' KICK OFF 1945 BST
As always the Champions League dictates we kick off at 1945 BST tonight. Join us from half an hour beforehand for all the team news, followed by live text commentary on Atletico Madrid v Chelsea.
0' THE REF
Some guys are just born to carry on their Dad's legacy, and Dutchman Bjorn Kuipers, son of a former referee, is one of them. Kuipers, labelled ‘good but arrogant' by a leaked Dutch league referee report, owns an award-winning supermarket back in his native Oldenzaal. Rumours that he's offering half-price pasties for players on good behaviour tonight appear to be wide of the mark.
0' CRISIS CLUB
Unbelievably, there is a high-profile European team is the midst of a deeper crisis than Liverpool – not only are Atletico producing relegation form in La Liga, they're set to be dumped out of the Champions League with a defeat tonight. Los Colchoneros have changed their boss since losing 4-0 at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, replacing Abel Resino with former Valencia gaffer Quique Flores.
0' CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
With qualification for the knockout stages seemingly a formality, Carlo Ancelotti may decide to rest key players ahead of Sunday's crucial game with Manchester United at the Bridge. Jose Bosingwa, Ashley Cole, John Obi Mikel and Yuri Zhirkov are all doubts, but Didier Drogba is available again after serving a three match ban for his flip-flop tirade against Barcelona last May.
0' PREVIEW
Top of the Premier League, won four on the trot (with results of 4-0, 5-0, 4-0 and 4-0 to boot), won three from three in the Champion League without conceding a goal – there's a strong case to be put for saying Chelsea are Europe's form team at the moment. As for Atletico, well they're La Liga's equivalent of Hull City, sitting as they are third from bottom of the Spanish league table. So what price an upset tonight at the Vicente Calderon? The odds favour an away win, but no team containing Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan and Maxi Rodriguez can be written off.
